ABSTRACT
The engine cooling system functions to prevent overheating and consequent damage to engine components. Engine heat arises from the combustion of fuel within the cylinders, which is utilized to generate power. This research was conducted due to the prevalent use of municipal tap water in radiators by the owners of Mandatory Motor Vehicle Test in the Surakarta city area. The study was carried out on a Mitsubishi Colt Diesel L300 vehicle, with engine revolutions of 2.500 and 3.100 rpm. The results indicated that tap water has the poorest heat exchange capacity compared to other coolants. This was evidenced at 2.500 rpm with the incoming radiator water temperature (Th1) of 90˚C, and 96.4˚C at 3.100 rpm, resulting in engine temperatures of 92.1˚C at 2500 rpm and 98.4˚C at 3.100 rpm. Meanwhile, the most effective coolant was the Prestie Radiator Coolant brand, with Th1 at 2.500 rpm of 74.6˚C and at 3.100 rpm of 78.2˚C, resulting engine operating temperatures of 84.7˚C at 2.500 rpm and 88.8˚C at 3.100 rpm.
