ABSTRACT
The manufacturing of train side walls utilizes SUS 304 and 201 plates with resistance spot welding (RSW), which results in neat joints, fast processes, and no filler metals. However, ensuring joint strength meets standards is crucial due to potential welding defects in stainless steel trains. This study aims to evaluate shear strength and reduce defects in RSW by varying welding time. Experiments were conducted with welding parameters set at 16-24 cycles, constant current of 10 kA, and a 16 mm diameter copper electrode. Post-welding, penetrant testing and shear testing of specimens were performed. Results indicate surface defects increased at welding times of 22 and 24 cycles due to inadequate cooling. The highest shear strength was recorded at 20 cycles (304.217 MPa), whereas 24 cycles showed the lowest shear strength (275.582 MPa) due to brittleness and embrittlement from prolonged welding and insufficient cooling. Thus, longer welding times do not necessarily ensure better shear strength
